Matt's Story

Today’s story might surprise you. It still blows me away—and I’ve known it since I was a teenager!

It started in London... a 7-year-old boy experienced a devastating loss.

‍

His father had taken his own life.

‍

You may have heard of this little boy. His name is Matt Redman. A few years after his world was blown to bits, 10-year-old Matt came with his mom to QPR Football Stadium.

‍

Amidst a crowd of thousands of young Brits, Matt’s heart ached with questions. Why would he do it? Why would he leave me alone? Didn’t he love us enough?

‍

Throughout the stadium, a voice with a rich Argentine accent poured out the Good News. It was my dad, Luis Palau. “Even if your father was a poor example, and your mother left your family, you come to the loving Father. He is the ideal father.”

‍

The Gospel of a caring father hit his ears like music. He’d never heard the love of God described this way before. Matt knew in that moment that’s what he wanted to live for. He gave his life to Jesus that night.

‍

The years that followed were rough. Matt’s mother remarried a fairly abusive man. But, through the storms of life, he clung to Jesus. He could not talk to anyone about the dark things happening in his life—but he could talk to Jesus.

‍

Matt Redman went on to write worship songs that would touch the hearts of millions. Whether you know it or not, you have probably worshiped to many of them over the years!

Then, in 2015, a beautiful full-circle moment unfolded. Matt Redman shared a stage with Luis Palau in Times Square and Central Park in New York City, inviting thousands more to make that defining choice to follow Jesus.

This is the power of Gospel! To meet people in the middle of their pain. To offer hope when life feels hopeless. To change lives that change lives. And God doesn’t just use guys like Luis Palau and Matt Redman—He works through each and every one of us. The Good News is for everyone. Let’s keep sharing it!
